Kids get a Spring Break, which is awesome … for them. You don’t get a break. The obligations, stress, and responsibilities just keep adding up and eventually you can reach a breaking point.
Christmas Break in Las Vegas was great and all, but for the past three months you’ve spent an average of four hours a day in the car, shuffling your kids around from school to lacrosse practice, to their youth group activities, and now you’re all eating alone at night because no one is present. You’re exhausted, up at six every morning to make breakfast and lunch for the family, and in between trips to school and back, you’re cleaning the house and working your own job. Solace and peace have escaped you and that break your kids are getting is going to fly over your house yet again.
What can you do? Seriously, what are you going to do? They get a break, and yet every opportunity that comes your way is replaced with a new demand from your kids. It’s not like they’re pushing you; it’s just that life is, well… life. It’s busy, constant, and growing ever more complex as the days get longer with the time change.
You need to learn how to say no.
You’re going to say no to them and yes to you. You see, there is a careful balance that needs to exist between your family’s needs and that of your own. While life can become stressful and busy and to an extent that’s normal, there is a time when it becomes a new normal and not just a busy season.
Say no to them and yes to you.
It can be done, but it takes time. You have to reach down inside yourself and acknowledge that something is off and something else has to give. They will be ok, but more than that, you will be ok. Kids can carpool, arrange trips to and from sports and night time activities, and you can focus on yourself, knowing that this one small decision can improve everyone’s outlook on life.
Look. Your kids and spouse can see the damage that an insane schedule is causing. They know what a healthy parent looks like and how a strung-out parent acts on stress. Everyone is looking for peace, but you’re the only one who can take action on it.
Saying no to your family and yes to yourself is easier said than done, right?
